How to Start Surfing: A Beginner’s Guide to Catching Your First Wave

Ever dreamed of surfing but felt unsure where to start? You're not alone — I was once in your shoes. My surf journey began 8 years ago with a road trip from France to Morocco, and it's been transformational ever since.

Surfing is not only a sport, it’s a mindfulness practice, a connection to nature, and a way to build resilience. Here's how to get started:

1. Start with a Foam Board

Foam surfboards are beginner-friendly and safe. Look for a board at least 7’6” in length. You can try this beginner foam board.

2. Choose the Right Wetsuit

A good wetsuit keeps you warm and comfortable. I recommend this one for chilly coastal days.

3. Find a Surf School or Friendly Coach

Don’t be afraid to take lessons — it makes a huge difference early on. Look for surf camps near the coast or community surf projects.

4. Practice Pop-Ups at Home

Lay your board on grass or a mat and practice the motion. It’ll help you feel more stable when you're actually in the water.

5. Remember: Progress is Not Linear

Some days you’ll feel like a pro, others like a potato in the sea. That’s okay — just keep going. 🌊

Surfing changed my life. Maybe it’ll change yours too.
