How to Start Rowing: Team, Technique & Mental Calm

Rowing is one of the most rewarding sports I’ve ever tried — both for physical fitness and for mental clarity. If you’re looking for a team-oriented activity that strengthens the body and calms the mind, rowing might be your perfect match.

I joined a coastal rowing club in Scotland, and quickly fell in love with the power of rhythm, teamwork, and the meditative pull of the oars cutting through sea and loch.

1. Join a Local Rowing Club

Find a local coastal or indoor rowing club to learn the basics. Clubs usually offer taster sessions and coaching.

2. Learn the Stroke Technique

The rowing stroke includes catch, drive, finish, and recovery. Practice on an indoor machine or with a coach — technique protects you from injury and helps your team row in sync.

3. Invest in the Right Gear

Comfortable sportswear, wading boots or water shoes, and padded rowing gloves can make your early sessions much easier.

4. Stay Present

Rowing is a full-body movement that demands focus. That’s part of the mental health magic: you must be fully in the moment.

5. Connect With Your Crew

Nothing builds trust like synchronising movement on the water. I've met lifelong friends through rowing — and we still laugh about our very first wobbly strokes!

If you’re ready for a challenge that builds both body and soul — rowing is waiting for you.
